As mom to a 5-year-old with autism who can NEVER seem to keep a shirt on (or sometimes pants), I am so proud of Raif! And happy for you. Sounds like it went really well. And I had to chuckle over how he excused the photographer. My son does that kind of thing too ("Okay...bye-bye!"). If only the rest of us could get away with telling people that it was time to leave like that...lol...

AWESOME!!! We are working on "and" with our guy right now and he is slowly picking it up. I get a big thrill when I hear him use it independently every now and then!! :)

Woohoooo! WTG Raif!

I can imagine you grinning ear to ear while you made dinner after that moment. I hope there are many such moments in your future.

My son has autism and is now 5, and this is something we've been working HARD on since he was diagnosed at a year and a half old. I have always had such a fear of him suffering and not letting us know because although he is somewhat verbal, he is very stoic and does not seem to register pain the same way we do.

He just recently learned some more detailed body parts (armpits, fingernails, palms, etc) and has been using them to tell us what itches or hurts. He just went through a really bad allergy phase (found out he was severely allergic to our cat) and would come to me saying, "scratch armpit, please!" or "my toe itches!" It was wonderful to hear him being so precise.

My husband and I still stress a lot over things like sore throats, cramps, headaches and things that are more general in nature. It can make you nuts worrying over it!!

This is a big worry for me too. My son, Shea, has a severe speech delay. I hate the thought of him hurting and not being able to tell us. I loose sleep at night thinking stuff like that.

You are not alone. Hang in there.

Hi Missy!

We live in Wichita, KS and have one son, adopted this year from the FC system at the age of 11 and one more on the way, will move in at the end of December, also from the system, and he is nine. Both my dh and I are 27 and are planning on many adopted children. We measured the bedrooms yesterday and we have room for 10 boys in our current home. We are hoping to adopt a sibling group of 3-5 once we finalize with our second son and get him acclimated to life with us. We too are very committed to our faith and could not be parenting our children without the Lord on our side. Our oldest son, T, has ADHD, RAD and ODD and spent 11 years in the system without a single family of permanence. Our second son, Z, has had 9 homes in five years. We homeschool T and will be bringing Z into the homeschool fold in January. So, I understand much of your motivation and many of the issues you face. I'd love to get together and chat sometime if you are close to Wichita and would like to have another friend who understands! - Blessings - Kelly
